Knights Van Hire usage policy details everything you need to know before hiring a vehicle from SL1 Vehicle Hire including, driver qualifications, European travel and rental extension information.

Identification required if UK Resident
When collecting the vehicle, the Lead Driver must present
- a valid driving licence. If old (paper-only) style, official photo ID must also be presented. Official photo ID must be valid, we cannot accept expired official photo ID. If new photocard style, we cannot accept an expired photocard (see Driving Licences section for further details)
- if the licence does not show current home address (this includes licences issued in EU countries and driver resides in UK), a valid passport or national identity card must be presented
- 2 additional forms of ID to confirm home address. One must be the credit card statement/bank statement for the credit card/debit card being presented for deposit and additional charges. The other should be a formal document (eg. utilities bill) both must be dated within 8 weeks of date of hire and be original documents
- a credit or debit card in their own name.
- additional drivers must present a valid driving licence – we cannot accept an expired photocard – plus passport or national identity card if licence does not show current home address
- if you cannot fulfil the stated ID requirements please contact the renting location prior to booking to discuss options.
Identification required if non UK Resident
When collecting the vehicle, the Lead Driver must present
- passport (or national identity card if European citizen if this has been used to enter the UK)
- a credit card in their own name (please note debit cards are not accepted).
- a valid driving licence from country of residence (licence must show an English translation if not issued in Europe)
- travel documentation confirming dates of arrival and departure to/from the UK
- if you cannot fulfil the stated ID requirements please contact the renting location prior to booking to discuss options.
Drivers under the age of 25
All drivers must be aged 21 or over. Drivers aged 21-24 may only rent vehicles up to Standard category, Small and Medium Vans. Drivers must have held a full driving licence for at least 24 months and are only accepted with referral, please contact the renting location prior to booking to discuss options. We cannot take online bookings for drivers under 25, and vehicle excesses are set at £950.
Driving Licenses and History
Drivers must have held a full driving licence for at least 12 months. Licence endorsements up to 6 points are accepted. If the driver has over 6 points in the last 5years they will need to be referred. If the driver has been banned from driving for a DD, DR or UT offence, or has been disqualified for 12 months or more, we will only rent 5 years or more after the return of the licence.
Add-On Services
Knights Van Hire offer a wide range of additional services that you can add to your booking to make the most of your rental experience. Additional services available include satellite navigation hire, local pick-up and drop-off and the option of a free sack-trolley.
Excess Waiver
You can choose to reduce the excess waiver on any vehicle by paying an additional charge of £15 per day. This fee is capped at £70 per week. If you opt out of paying the excess waiver fee, an excess of £750 is required across our range of vehicles, excluding Lutons, which are charged at £950 excess.
Important information:
Please note that the excess does not cover damage to the vehicle caused by hitting low level objects such as bridges or low branches as well as damage caused by failure to pay due care and attention to potential hazards. It also does not cover costs following a road traffic accident where our vehicle has to be recovered from an off-road location and there is no third party involved. All costs incurred must be fully paid by the hirer.
Deposits
A minimum £350 deposit is required on all hires. Full deposit requirements will be confirmed at the time of vehicle collection. Customers who place their reservations over the phone will be informed of the deposit requirements at the time of booking. Deposits should be paid at the branch and cannot be paid in cash.
Satellite Navigation (GPS)
FREE, why not take the hassle out of finding your way around a new city with our reliable Tom Tom Sat Navs. Our satellite navigations are easy to use and will help you on your travels without the need of a map. We offer full fitting of the device and an operating demonstration from one of our rental staff.
Any Sat Nav not returned, will be billable at a £250 charge. Please note these are subject to availability.
Additional Drivers
Arrive at your destination feeling fresher by adding an additional driver to your car hire. You can add up to three extra drivers in order to help share the driving. All will have the same insurance cover as the main driver. Adding an additional driver to your rental will cost as little as £5 per day including VAT. A maximum charge of £50 for the duration of hire.
Local Pick-up and Drop-off Services
With our local drop off service, one of our drivers will drop off your vehicle, saving you time and money organising taxis or working out public transport times. This hassle-free service is only bookable via the phone, and dependant on availability. Charges will apply.
Child Car Seats
Children under 135cm or under 12 years of age, are required by UK law to use appropriate child restraints when travelling in cars. It is the driver’s legal responsibility to ensure the child is correctly restrained.
Knights Van Hire does not provide child seats and this must be pre-arranged by the customer.
Parking
Knights Van Hire offers all customers the option to park in our secure on site parking free of charge. If you are struggling to get a lift to the branch why not take advantage of this FREE service.
