How Does Commuting Affect You?

As anyone who has to commute knows, it can be exhausting. But are there other impacts on our health and wellbeing that we’re not considering? The HR Director recently shared research from Office Space in Town, which found that one in three people in the UK commute for more than 90 minutes each day.

The biggest complaint among commuters was how long their journey took, with 32 per cent citing this as the biggest issue. Congestion on the roads was a close second, with 31 per cent naming this as a problem. What’s more, 75 per cent of people said that the commute is a factor in their decision on whether or not to take a job.

Over 60 per cent of those surveyed said that their commute was affecting their ability to get enough sleep, while 55 per cent said that it negatively affects how often they see family and friends.

The news provider noted that embracing flexible working could be one way for firms to address some of these issues and give employees a break from their commute at least a day or two a week.

Earlier this month, Dealer Support reported that commuting time has increased by 18 hours in the past decade, citing figures from the TUC. What’s more, the news provider shared data from Totaljobs, which revealed the average person will spend £133,000 on commuting during their working lives.
