How will the ULEZ (Ultra Low Emissions Zone) affect drivers in Reading Berkshire?

It will cover the same area as the congestion charge zone and most cars, vans and trucks; regardless of whether they are petrol or diesel, are likely to be affected.  The aim of the ULEZ is to improve air quality and the ULEZ zone is set to expand by 2021 to the area bounded by the North and South Circular roads as well as into other major cities such as Birmingham.  From the 8th April 2019 the daily charge to enter the ULEZ zone will be £12.50 for cars and most vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.  For buses/coaches over 5 tonnes and vehicles such as trucks over 3.5 tonnes this charge will be £100 a day.

With Reading’s proximity to London many of us either live in, work in or travel frequently into London.  The quickest way to check if a vehicle you own or are hiring meets the ULEZ standards is to use the ULEZ vehicle checker.  We recommend that if you are travelling into London after the 8th April 2019 that you let our staff at Berkshire Van Hire know as soon as possible so we can prioritise your booking onto vehicles that meet the ULEZ standard.

To make booking easier and stress free after the ULEZ comes into effect we are currently updating our fleet to meet the ULEZ standards.  We have new Transit 350 Luton boxes as well as Mercedes-Benz Atego 7.5-ton trucks which all meet the ULEZ!  So you can still depend on us for car, van and truck hire in Reading and the South East!

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)

To help improve air quality, an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will be in place in central London from the 8th April 2019, in the same area as the Congestion Charge. Vehicles will need to meet a new, tighter exhaust emission standard or be liable for a daily charge to drive within the ULEZ area.
